Technology Unit 10: Hydrogen energy, pros and cons

Hydrogen is a powerful and abundant source of energy. Hydrogen cannot be directly found in nature but we can obtain it through the electrolysis of water or through coal and natural gas reforming.

The only disposal produced when burning Hydrogen is water, that is why it is consider one of the cleanest sources of energy. Moreover it is far more energetic than any of the traditional fossil fuels.

But Hydrogen also has some serious drawbacks such as the high cost of its production or the sophisticated security systems required.

Now, we are going to report in detail both the positive and the negative aspects of the use of this great source of energy:

Pros of the use of Hydrogen as a source of energy:

1. Renewable and Abundant: Hydrogen is the most abundant chemical element in the Universe.
2. Clean Energy Fuel: The only disposal produced when burning Hydrogen is water.
3. Non-Toxic: Hydrogen does not have any subsequent effect on human's health or on the environment.
4. More powerful than fossil fuels: Hydrogen produces more energy than any type of fossil fuel.
Cons of Hydrogen Energy:
1. Expensive: It is highly expensive to produce Hydrogen from water or from methane. Technologies that enable us to obtain this product must become a lot cheaper.
2. Transportation: It is also very difficult to transport Hydrogen from one part to another because we have to use a sophisticated network of pipelines.
3. Not enough Hydrogen fuel stations: It is extraordinary difficult to find an Hydrogen fuel station to supply a vehicule.
4. Safety Concerns: Hydrogen is very reactive so it must be carefully stored if we don not want it to provoke an accident.
